Andrew Herron - Background

After just two seasons of car racing action, Andrew Herron has marked himself out as one of the UK's most exciting young drivers with an incredibly bright future.

Debuting in the ultra-competitive ELF Renault Clio Cup in 2007, the Northern Ireland sensation immediately began to turn heads with his pace and ability behind the wheel of a front-wheel drive saloon car.

Ending his maiden campaign a superb ninth overall in the driver standings, with one podium finish to his credit, Andrew went on to bag four rostrums from four races in the ELF Renault Clio Winter Cup – the most notable finish being a lights-to-flag race win during round three of the series at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire.

Graduating to the SEAT Cupra Championship for 2008, the young race ace enjoyed another hugely successful season at the wheel of a powerful, 300bhp SEAT Leon Cupra.

Quickly establishing himself as a category front-runner, Andrew went on to end the campaign fifth overall in the driver standings with five podium finishes in total, comprising four second positions and one third place.

Following the announcement by SEAT Sport UK the 2008 season would be the last for the SEAT Cupra Championship, Andrew had to change his plans for 2009 and as such he has returned to the Renault Clio Cup for a full championship bid.

Andrew was a relatively late starter in the realms of competitive racing in comparison to his peers, making his karting debut in 2004 at the age of 16. Not that he showed any signs of being green during his maiden season by immediately challenging for honours.

Moving into senior-level karting in 2005, an excellent year saw him finish third in the Irish Rotax Max Championship, just five points splitting the top three, with further success coming in a variety of club categories including title victory in the Athboy Club Championship.

Eager to keep the ball rolling and continue his already rapid progression through the ranks, Andrew chose to combine British and European ICA campaigns in 2006 and produced performances belying his experience.

Finishing 16th out of 138 entries in the prestigious Winter Cup meeting at Garda, Italy, was proof enough of this young racer’s breathtaking natural talent.

So with just three full years of karting experience behind him prior to his stunning Clio Cup debut at the beginning of 2007, it’s clear Andrew’s rise has been nothing short of exceptional. The future truly looks very bright indeed for one of Northern Ireland’s and Britain’s most exciting young racers.

The Herron Family - A Racing Tradition

Northern Ireland is, of course, a hotbed for motorcycling and the Herrons are a huge part of this tradition. Andrew's cousin, Tom Herron, was a world-famous road racer and works Suzuki rider in the 1970s.

Unfortunately, that heritage is tinged with great sadness due to the untimely passing of Tom following an accident just as his career was about to rocket to even greater heights with a move into Grand Prix racing.

Andrew is the first member of the Herrons to become immersed in the world of four-wheeled motorsport but he carries with him the spirit and determination which formed such a large part of Tom's racing ethic.

As a huge fan too of the late, great Ulster motorcycling legend Joey Dunlop - the undisputed king of road-racing - Andrew competes today with #3 on his Clio in deference to his child-hood hero.
